Edward Beale McLean Jr. was born on September 16, 1935, in Washington D.C. He was the son of Edward Beale McLean, the publisher of The Washington Post, and Evalyn Walsh McLean, a socialite and heiress to the McLean fortune.

McLean Jr. attended Harvard University, but dropped out before graduating to pursue a career in journalism. He worked as a reporter for The Washington Post and later became the publisher of the paper, following in his father's footsteps.

In addition to his work in journalism, McLean Jr. was also an art collector. He inherited his mother's famous jewelry collection, including the Hope Diamond, and sold it in 1958. He used the proceeds to build his art collection, which included works by Picasso, Matisse, and others.

However, McLean Jr. struggled with addiction and financial problems throughout his life. He declared bankruptcy several times and spent time in rehabilitation centers for drug and alcohol abuse. He died on June 11, 1995, at the age of 59.
